AUA and The University of the West Indies, Mona have signed a Medical Clerkship Agreement that lets AUA students complete their core and elective clerkships at UWI Mona and its affiliated hospitals. It runs alongside AUA's regular clinical programme, a second route through the same degree, and it is open to every AUA student, not a selective cohort.
Your clinical training, at a ranked regional teaching institution
Most AUA students complete clerkships at teaching hospitals in the United States. This programme is the alternative: the same clinical curriculum, delivered outside the US, at a regional medical school with its own affiliated hospital network.
Open to all students. There is no quota you have to place into and no minimum cohort size, and the agreement sets no minimum number of students. Any AUA student who has satisfied the pre-clinical sciences and is in good academic and financial standing may be nominated. UWI Mona then makes the admission decision on merit and on available clinical capacity.
Train in a different health system, with a patient population and disease mix you will not see on a US rotation, useful preparation for global health, tropical medicine and primary care.
You remain registered at AUA throughout and continue as a candidate for the AUA degree. UWI Mona registers you as a non-regular student, so you do not earn, and are not eligible for, a UWI qualification.
UWI Mona has reviewed AUA's Clinical Curriculum Guide and teaches the programme in line with it, providing clinical supervision and patient access across Mona and its affiliated hospitals.
A UWI ID card, basic health services under UWI Mona's Student Health Insurance Scheme, plus libraries, the medical library, study spaces, IT and student support on the same terms as comparable UWI students, where available.
Core clerkships cover Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Family Medicine. Electives are chosen by you. The phases run in order, and each one has to be completed before the next begins.
The programme is open to all AUA students, but every clerkship student arrives cleared on the same checklist. AUA nominates; UWI Mona has final authority on admission and decides how many places it can offer each year.
AUA appoints only students who have satisfied all pre-clinical requirements and are fully qualified to begin clinical clerkships, and who are in good academic and financial standing at AUA.
AUA verifies your compliance with UWI Mona's vaccination requirements, and every student completes the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Workshop before the first rotation.
Medical malpractice insurance must be in place before you start and for the whole time it is required; UWI Mona will ask for evidence of cover. Health insurance confirmation is also required.
Obtaining any visa, permit or documentation needed to take part is your responsibility alone. Start early, and budget for passport and visa costs.
Teaching at UWI Mona is in English. Nominees must be proficient in spoken and written English.
AUA submits your authenticated documents on your behalf, and you must meet UWI Mona's application procedures and documentation requirements.
Nomination deadline: 31 July. To start rotations in September or October, AUA must formally nominate you by 31 July, unless both institutions agree otherwise. Because the academic year runs 1 August to 31 July, that deadline sits right at the year boundary, so plan a term ahead.
Rotation tuition is charged per week and billed to AUA on your behalf. Everything else is paid by you directly. UWI Mona reserves the right to adjust fees, so treat these as the agreed rates rather than a permanent price list.
